If you are unsure whether a garment is genuine or synthetic leather, here are some tips on how to tell the difference.
The texture: real leather has an irregular and porous texture. To date, synthetic leather cannot replicate it.
The smell: Real leather has a strong, mature, woody smell.
The dyeing: The dyeing on a leather jacket is always different to its counterpart, it will always have a little unevenness, as leather is more difficult to dye than plastic.
Weight and flexibility, a genuine leather jacket will weigh more if it is made from thicker leather and will adapt more to your shape as you wear it. This will never happen with poly leather jackets unless weights are added to replicate this.
Heat resistance. If a genuine leather jacket is brought close to a heat source, it will not automatically burn, as it is a very heat resistant material. On the other hand, if applied to a poly leather jacket, it will unravel, as the polymer is not heat resistant.
