How to preserve properly a leather garment

Leather complements almost any type of outfits, and like other garments, it is important to take good care of them so that they last a long time.

Here are some tips to properly care for your leather garment:

  1. Don't let the garment get wet: Try to avoid rain by wearing leather. If the leather inevitably gets wet, be sure to dry it properly before storing it. Additionally, once dry it will probably need to be reconditioned.
  2. Use thick hangers to store leather garments, additionally do not cover them with a plastic bag. Leather needs to breathe, and as such plastic is not recommended. In case they need to be covered, you can cover them with a breathable fabric.
  3. Keep your leather garments away from heat: Heat can be harmful to leather, as it can dehydrate it. Never leave your leather garments near a heater, or any heat emitter. It can damage and dry it out.
  4. Clean periodically from time to time, or whenever conditioner is to be applied. These are oils and other products that will help keep the leather moisturized, and prolong the life of a jacket. The cleaning and conditioning process will depend on the type of leather and the finish you are looking for.
  5. Do not fold. If a leather jacket is left folded for prolonged periods of time, it may begin to show cracks in its texture. Whenever possible, it is important to store garments.
